R&D Engineer (PhD Student) – Electrical Machines

About the role

ABB is looking for an R&D Engineer to join the High Power Motors & Generators division in Helsinki. You will work as a PhD student on a project focused on recyclable permanent‑magnet synchronous machine rotors, combining industry and university research.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct independent research on electromagnetic design and multi‑material topology optimisation of PMSM rotors.
• Develop and run finite‑element simulations, prototype hardware, and perform experimental validation.
• Publish results in high‑impact journals and complete doctoral coursework at Aalto University.
• Collaborate with the Design and Method Development team to integrate findings into ABB products.

Required profile

• Master of Science in Electrical Engineering with grades qualifying for doctoral studies.
• Strong background in electromagnetic design of rotating machines, especially PMSMs.
• Motivation to pursue a PhD in electrical machines jointly with ABB and Aalto University.
• Fluent English at an advanced academic level and legal right to work in Finland/EU.

Required skills

• Finite‑element simulation methods.
• Programming in Python, MATLAB or equivalent.
• Knowledge of electromagnetic analysis of PMSMs.
• Familiarity with topology optimisation or structural optimisation (advantage).
