Doctoral and Postdoctoral Researcher – Hybrid Magnonics-Photonics

About the role

Aalto University's Nanomagnetism and Spintronics group is looking for Doctoral Researchers (PhD students) and Postdoctoral Researchers to run experiments on a project that couples superconducting qubits, magnons and photoluminescent spin ions on a single chip-scale device. Magnons connect the microwave and optical domains, enabling efficient microwave-to-optical quantum transduction and magnon-mediated entanglement between spin ions. Positions are open across three research topics.

Key responsibilities

• Topic 1: Develop high-Q superconducting microwave cavities on garnet substrates integrated with transmon circuits, depositing and nanostructuring Nb and NbN resonators, designing a shared cavity and characterising qubit-magnon coupling.
• Topic 2: Build integrated high-Q optical cavities where magnons and spin ions are strongly coupled at millikelvin temperatures, using pulsed laser deposition, atomic layer deposition and liquid-phase epitaxy, and develop fibre-to-chip coupling and cryogenic packaging.
• Topic 3: Build a cryogenic imaging platform based on multimode-fibre holography, extending it to spatially resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy and the optical addressing and readout of single spin ions.

Required profile

• Excellent record in magnonics, magnetism, quantum technology, superconducting circuits, optics and photonics, or materials science; no need to cover all areas.
• Good command of spoken and written English and proven ability to communicate scientific results; Finnish not required.
• Motivation to publish high-impact articles at an international level.
• Doctoral Researchers must hold an MSc in physics or a suitable field; Postdoctoral Researchers must hold a PhD in physics or a related discipline or be close to finishing one.

What we offer

• Doctoral positions of 2 years initially, renewable for another 2 years after a midterm review; starting salary 3,142.65 EUR gross per month.
• Postdoctoral positions of 2 years initially, with possible extension; starting salary 4,229.48 to 4,649.25 EUR gross per month depending on experience.
