Doctoral and/or Postdoctoral Researcher, Compound Semiconductor Energy Converters

About the role

The Engineered NanoSystems (ENS) research group at Aalto University School of Science is looking for a doctoral and/or postdoctoral researcher to develop electroluminescent and thermophotonic energy converters based on III-V compound semiconductors and thin-film devices. The work covers epitaxial growth, material development, device design, characterization and modeling, combining theorists and experimentalists.

The group works on optical heat pumps and energy harvesting based on electroluminescence, in a clean room environment at Aalto University and the Micronova clean room facilities in Espoo. The positions are full-time, scheduled up to 3-5 years, with the doctoral researcher contract initially for two years and then extended after a mid-term review.

Required profile

• Earlier studies in a suitable field; doctoral candidates must meet the admission requirements of the Aalto Doctoral Programme in Science.
• Postdoctoral candidates are preferred, but a very good match for the needs may lead to consideration of doctoral candidates.
• Good knowledge of the optics and physics of compound semiconductors, with emphasis on GaAs-based materials, MOCVD, solar cells, infrared lasers and/or LEDs.
• Experience or interest in III-V device clean room processing, tools and process development, and in materials characterization and optical encapsulation.
• Strong analytical skills, teamwork, sociability and a good command of English.

What we offer

• Salary according to Finnish university scales: postdoctoral researcher around 4,403 EUR per month, doctoral researcher around 3,143 EUR per month, rising with achievements such as publications.
• Work in a team of about 10-15 people on projects funded by the EIC, ERC and national foundations.
