About the role
Aalto University's OtaNano Low Temperature Laboratory (LTL) is looking for a Staff Scientist to lead the build-up, benchmarking and sustained operation of a quantum-computing infrastructure based on superconducting transmon qubits at cryogenic temperatures. The role combines daily technical support for users, supervision and training of researchers, and research in quantum computing and simulations. It is a 2-year full-time fixed-term position, starting as soon as possible.
Key responsibilities
- Provide daily technical support to users of the LTL facilities and the quantum computer, and train them in the tools and instruments.
- Maintain equipment at optimal performance and perform calibrations and characterisation of the quantum processor according to manufacturer specifications.
- Ensure the quantum computer runs correctly, including hardware upgrades and firmware updates.
- Help maintain infrastructure governance and open it up through partnerships, agreements and access programmes.
- Apply for international and national funding related to quantum computing.
- Supervise and train doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, and develop the infrastructure for teaching and training.
- Conduct research in quantum computing and simulations, with superconducting qubits, acoustic and other hybrid quantum systems.
Required profile
- PhD in physical, materials, engineering or computer science or a related discipline.
- Proven experience in cryogenic technologies and in controlling superconducting qubits and related devices.
- Experience in equipment build-up, benchmarking, operation and maintenance.
- Previous research experience with quantum computing toolkits such as Qiskit, QuTiP, PennyLane or Quil.
- Fluent English; Finnish not required.
Required skills
- Understanding of quantum computing principles and quantum algorithms.
- Experience in microwave signal processing.
- Strong numerical skills in MATLAB, Mathematica, Python or similar.
- Familiarity with the firmware of control instruments.
- Excellent communication, organisation and teamwork skills.
What we offer
- 2-year full-time fixed-term position.
