Doctoral Researcher – HUMAIN Project on AI Competence

About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral researcher to join the HUMAIN project, which investigates how large language models approximate, extend, or diverge from human expertise across various domains. The position is fully funded for 46–48 months, with a start date no later than 1 November 2026.

Key responsibilities

• Support the further development of the Competence Imitation Game (COMIG) framework.
• Design, conduct, and manage empirical studies involving human participants.
• Collect, analyse, and report quantitative and qualitative data.
• Collaborate with the Research group on AI in Society and Education (RAISE), Associate Professor Linda Mannila, Dr. Otto Segersven, and a newly recruited post‑doctoral researcher.
• Contribute to the creation of cross‑domain datasets of paired human–AI responses and to the evaluation of adaptation techniques such as prompt calibration and fine‑tuning.

Required profile

• Background in computer science, data science, language technology, or a related discipline (e.g., social sciences with strong data‑science skills).
• Proven experience in research methodology, especially designing and implementing studies with human participants.
• Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis capabilities.
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and communicate research findings effectively.
