Senior FPGA Design Engineer

About the role

IQM builds world‑leading quantum computers and is looking for a Senior FPGA Design Engineer to create high‑speed FPGA logic for its quantum control systems. You will work within the Scalable Electronics team, collaborating with hardware, software, quantum error‑correction and physics experts to deliver scalable, high‑performance quantum computers.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, simulate and benchmark FPGA IP blocks in VHDL.
• Integrate IP blocks into complete designs and evaluate alternative solutions with the team.
• Optimize data throughput, latency and resource usage while aligning interfaces and protocols with software, firmware and hardware stakeholders.
• Maintain tooling, documentation and knowledge sharing across domain experts.
• Own specific IP blocks, drive continuous improvement and mentor junior engineers.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years of professional experience designing FPGA IP and validating designs through simulation.
• BSc/MSc in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
• Comfortable working in a collaborative, low‑hierarchy environment across multiple disciplines.
• Strong understanding of digital logic fundamentals, clock domain crossing and safe data transfers.

Required skills

• Proficient VHDL development for high‑performance FPGA families.
• Experience with Intel/Altera FPGAs and Quartus toolchain.
• Knowledge of high‑speed communication protocols and hardware‑software interfaces.
• Scripting skills for automating tool flows and building CI pipelines.
• Hands‑on lab measurement experience using oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers.
