Product Design Engineer – Camera

About the role

Skydio’s camera systems are essential for autonomous navigation, situational awareness, and high‑quality imaging in demanding environments. As a Product Design Engineer you will design, prototype, test, and refine the mechanical systems that enable our camera modules to perform reliably.

Key responsibilities

• Create 3D CAD models and production‑ready 2D drawings for camera parts, assemblies, test equipment, and related mechanical systems.
• Design and build prototypes using 3D printing, CNC machining, and hands‑on assembly to evaluate new concepts and integration approaches.
• Develop test jigs, fixtures, and measurement setups for camera development, characterization, assembly, and validation.
• Perform tolerance analyses, finite‑element modeling, and correlate results with physical testing.
• Plan and conduct laboratory testing, analyze results, and document findings in clear engineering reports.
• Investigate mechanical and electromechanical failures, identify root causes, and support corrective actions.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, supply‑chain, and external vendors to support component fabrication and design improvements.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proven experience applying mechanical‑engineering fundamentals to develop physical products or electromechanical systems.
• Strong ability to create clear, well‑constructed mechanical part and assembly drawings.
• Detail‑oriented, methodical approach to debugging, characterization, and failure analysis.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across mechanical, optical, electrical, reliability, manufacturing, and supplier teams.

Required skills

• 3D CAD (experience with CATIA strongly preferred).
• Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and tolerance analysis.
• Rapid prototyping methods such as 3D printing and CNC machining.
• Design for manufacturing processes including injection molding, metal forming, and casting.
• Finite Element Analysis (model preparation, boundary conditions, result interpretation).
• Use of mechanical measurement and test equipment in a laboratory setting.
