Doctoral and postdoctoral positions in hybrid magnonics-photonics

About the role

We are seeking highly motivated Doctoral and Postdoctoral Researchers to join the Nanomagnetism and Spintronics group at Aalto University. The work focuses on hybrid magnonics‑photonics platforms that combine superconducting qubits, magnons and photoluminescent spin ions on a chip‑scale device.

Key responsibilities

• Develop high‑Q superconducting microwave cavities on garnet substrates and integrate them with transmon circuits.
• Perform thin‑film deposition (Nb, NbN, garnet) and nanostructuring, optimise devices for magnetic‑field resilience.
• Characterise qubit‑magnon coupling, magnon‑spin‑ion interactions and demonstrate microwave‑to‑optical conversion.
• Build and operate a cryogenic multimode‑fibre imaging platform for low‑temperature optical spectroscopy.

Required profile

• Strong academic record in magnonics, quantum technology, superconducting circuits, optics, photonics or materials science.
• For Doctoral positions: MSc in physics or a related field; for Postdoctoral positions: PhD in physics or a related discipline (or near completion).
• Excellent command of English and proven ability to publish scientific results.

Required skills

• Superconducting circuit design and fabrication.
• Thin‑film deposition techniques (pulsed laser deposition, atomic layer deposition).
• Microwave and optical spectroscopy, VNA‑FMR, spin‑wave measurement.
• Cryogenic measurement down to 30 mK, vector magnet control.
• Nanofabrication and two‑photon lithography.
