FPGA Design Engineer – Quantum Computing

About the role

At IQM we build world‑leading quantum computers. As an FPGA Design Engineer you will create high‑speed FPGA logic that connects quantum‑control subsystems and external interfaces, working within the tight timing constraints of quantum systems.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, simulate, and benchmark FPGA IP blocks in VHDL.
• Integrate IP blocks into complete designs and align interfaces, protocols, and documentation with software, firmware, and hardware stakeholders.
• Plan, evaluate, and optimise data throughput, latency, and FPGA resource usage.
• Collaborate with FPGA developers, hardware and software engineers, physicists, and quantum error‑correction experts.

Required profile

• At least 1 year of professional engineering experience.
• BSc/MSc in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering or equivalent.
• Experience designing FPGA IP blocks in HDL and validating designs through simulation.
• Comfortable working in a collaborative, low‑hierarchy environment.

Required skills

• Proficient VHDL development and familiarity with high‑performance FPGA families.
• Strong knowledge of digital logic fundamentals, clock‑domain concepts and safe data transfers.
• Experience with modern FPGA toolchains (e.g., Quartus) and high‑speed communication protocols.
• Scripting for tool‑flow automation and CI, plus hands‑on lab measurement using oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers.
